For the second part of this series on Little Turtle, I decided to focus on the American perspective for the bulk of the article. I used this as a device to divert the reader from the internal movements of the Miami Confederacy, so the eventual defeat of the American force would come as a surprise. Though little is actually known about the internal politics of the confederacy, what history has recorded actually came from Little Turtle’s own interactions with Americans in the years following the wars. In an 1802 meeting with then President Thomas Jefferson, the great War Chief expressed his hopes that both people would live in peace. This makes Little Turtle one of the most interesting subjects I have researched with respect to this subject. Seemingly forgotten by history, he managed to effectively challenge the strength of the United States. In his later years, he would again challenge the Americans, this time as an advocate for coexistence.
