What happened to the settlers of Roanoke? What did the ominous word, "Croatoan" mean? Even if this is no mystery to the lay-Historian, it is nonetheless a fantastic story. While the historical perspective of the subject has changed throughout the exploration of this topic, no theory has ever been fully accepted. While this article represents the current research on the subject, the conclusions are a theory--based on an examination of the facts at hand. It is only through such theories that one can truly get into the mechanics of History. Let the discussions begin!

Fantastic article, Jeffrey! I was fascinated to see the historical developments leading up to the disappearance and the current thoughts about what may have happened. I shared the story with several others, and plan to send the link to a few more. Good stuff!!

Do you think that it was capitalized as a proper noun for a reason? Maybe this was short for the Crow Indian tribe. From what I know, the Crow were a very savage branch of Native American.

In my reseach, Governor White had instructed the settlers of Roanoke to give an indication as to their whereabouts in the event of an emergency. The Croatoan (or Pamlico) tribe had friendly relations with the colonists, mostly through White's own efforts, and the evidence suggests that they relocated to their domain. However, this still remains a mystery--the conclusions in my article support the theory that the settlers relocated due to some disater (perhaps a coastal storm, or raid by an unfriendly tribe, or even pirates linked to Spain). It remains a theory based on the evidence, but new information is uncovered every day. Thank you for your comments. I hope you have enjoyed the articles and continue to propose new ideas.

the runes.. not letters... not greek r roman.. celtic... CRO is C: ken (fire, vision, light) R: rad (evolution, renewal, quest) O: inguz (auspicious completion) in that order, a rough translationis: a journey of light that must be completed as given... most likelythe accomplishment of a goal.. if it i celtic... that means greenland, around england... were there any conflicts around this time? as for croatoan, notice that both sets are different in how they are written? in other words, two different people, and as for how far apart they were... well, you can solve the rest, right? here is a pic:
